In honor of National Public Radio's story on the psycology/history of changing "attractive" zones:
(Also, a tribute to whoever it was who finally realized that the bared midriff should go out of style. Thank goodness.)

Bum Roll: (late fifteen hundreds.) Round, padded object (think REALLY thick hula hoop whose inner diameter fits the body/waist/"bum" and whose outer diameter is a couple inches bigger. Picture and source at http://www.fashion-era.com/early_corsetry.htm ) Made bum seem bigger, (skirt started wider, making waist look smaller.)

(Direct quote:) "The original French meaning was support, but the word was out of use and the French chose to call a bra soutien-gorge. Cretan women wore bras thousands of years ago."
